I must admit I never have heard of Paatos before... Musically they are a little bit similar to the Gathering (but this only applies to the first track). Otherwise their music is melancholic post rock with some ambient harmonies. Paatos is a swedish quintet based in Stockholm. The vocalist Petronella Nettermalm's dreamy voice bears some similarity to Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, and some even say she "invokes the seemingly naïve charm of Björk" (read the description at InsideOut's website). The songs are quite ordinary downcasted melodic rock for the most part. They're good background music, melodic and soothing. Singer ain't bad either, her voice is soft and fits to the music smoothly. Most of the songs are melancholic, such as the heavy-hearted 'Reality'. Production on this album has been done very well... Sounds are clean without lacking atmosphere. Actually there isn't much to complain — only some little details, which pretty much depend on personal preference. Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson has done a really good job on mixing this album. The line-up contains some accomplished musicians such as the guitarist Peter Nylander, who actually has studied music at the Berklee College of Music (so there's no doubt about their skills). The music is quite good, but it isn't for everyone. Therefore, I recommend you to listen and decide whether this band is for you or not. Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (25.08.2004) « back
