The Danish extreme melodic metal group Mercenary's latest release "Architect of Lies" continues on its predecessors footsteps - namely on their path towards more accessible music. On average the tracks are now slightly shorter and more concise without losing the adventurous yet assertive style the group is nowadays known for. However, as a downside Mercenary's music loses some of its relisten value, and this album slowly starts to become a bit repetitious despite the group's unique style.

Without a doubt is Mercenary able to skilfully blend extreme and melodic metal into a cohesive style of their own, but at times the harsher growls of René Pedersen's are a bit unfocused. Regardless, for the most part they work really well, especially when accenting Mikkel Sandager's vocal parts. Production-wise this album has a bit more dynamic and open sound compared to the previous albums, which sadly were overcompressed. Overall, Architect of Lies should please all fans of the band as well as attract new ones with this slightly more commercial sound.
