On certain areas Alter Bridge's follow-up album to their fairly successful debut leaves the listener a bit cold. In a way it was what I expected, an interesting release filled with good musicianship, witty lyrics, interesting build-ups, vocal harmonies and melodies, all coupled with Mark Tremonti's tasteful yet sparse enough soloing. However, to balance this perfection, occasionally the music also relapses to generic commercial post-grunge. Production on this record is good but has its shortcomings... for example, slight distortion leaks in at times and overall there's just something about the production I quite don't like. The highlight on this album is without a doubt the title song Blackbird, which is also the longest song on this CD.
