If melodic power metal with strong pop-like sing-along choruses is something you'd fancy listening, then the eighth album by Swedish Nocturnal Rites is worth paying attention to. The group's soul is in Jonny Lindqvist, who is without a doubt one of today's best power metal vocalists. His charismatic voice together with melodic guitar lines and the catchy song structures stamp this release, and keep the listener intrigued at all times. Regardless, at times the material tends to fall a bit short in comparison to the better moments of this album, which in turn make up for those moderate sections. Compared to their previous works, the 8th Sin has a bit more aggressive and contemporary approach to songs, and occasionally industrial effects are included for flavour.

Production on this album has been handled fairly well, and this record sounds really good... for the most part - every now and then the guitar, however, is a tad too loud in the mix and introduces some distortion to the otherwise well-produced album. All in all, Nocturnal Rites' The 8th Sin is a welcome addition to any power metal fan's record collection.
