Fans of the legendary melodic doom metal group Candlemass were delighted with the group's return in 2004 with their self-titled album. However, the new Candlemass record might not appeal to all fans - one of the most noticeable changes on "King of the Grey Islands" is that the original vocalist Messiah Marcolin left the band and was replaced by Rob Lowe from Solitude Aeturnus. Rob actually does a very good job on this album - though he has a raspier sound than Messiah, it still suits the songs really well. Admittedly the music now sounds somewhat similar to that of Solitude Aeturnus, but I don't mind that, since it's inevitable with Rob's distinctive voice. King of the Grey Islands is a concept album covering dark subjects of today's society. The material is atmospheric and catchy for the most part, although there are also few uninspired sections here and there as well. Fortunately enough this record has certain charm and grows on the listener with ensuing listens. At times the music is even slightly reminiscent to that of Psychotic Waltz with trippy psychedelic sections. Overall, Candlemass' latest effort is a pleasant surprise in my book, despite the group having lost their original iconic front-man (again). Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (July 31st, 2007) « back
