A lot of Iced Earth fans will be pleased to hear that the famed Athens concert, which was originally released as a triple CD, is now also available as a DVD. As one can see from the tracklist, their setlist is pretty good, and the concert has actually been lauded as one of the best metal gigs of all time. In addition to the concert footage that was shot in 2 nights, this release also features some backstage material.

Production-wise this release could be better. It's a shame Schaffer initially turned down this project, as his involvement probably would have made this DVD release of higher quality. Naturally there's not much to do about the picture quality, as the concert was shot with three cameras back in 1999, but at least the audio and picture should be in sync. Unfortunately this isn't always the case on Alive in Athens DVD. Regardless, fans will most likely find this release worth checking out since there isn't another concert DVD available with former vocalist Matthew Barlow. Overall, this is somewhat average release due to few shortcomings regarding the production... musically, however, the material is up to Iced Earth standards.
