Now that Geoff Downes decided in favor of reuniting Asia in its former glory, John Payne was left without a band. Regardless, Payne didn't waste one moment before moving on and founding a new group under the moniker "GPS" together with the remaining bandmates who also got kicked out from Asia: Guthrie Govan and Jay Schellen. The line-up was then completed by Ryo Okumoto of Spock’s Beard fame.

The music of GPS is quite similar to Asia's, but that isn't surprising at all... the songs rely on melodic AOR, and are well produced. However, compared to Asia, GPS plays a bit more accentuated music with hard-hitting grooves and more focus on guitar parts. Unfortunately, the quality of material varies on this record (e.g. couple of songs are somewhat middling). As a whole, GPS' Window to the Soul is a good AOR record that's a worthy candidate for any music enthusiast's collection. While it isn't an instant classic, it does provide a good start for the band.
