Fooled Eyes is the debut album of Thessera, a progressive rock group formed in the early 2003. Already from the beginning this band has had an intent of playing multidimensional progmetal with Brazilian rhythms, and elements taken from fusion, blues, and classical music among others. Unsurprisingly this record follows a theme, as is the custom on most progrock albums. The story of Fooled Eyes is a spirited one, and it manages to enthral the listener. Being a concept album, the music really needs the lyrics to work. Thus listening to this album isn't that rewarding if one doesn't pay attention to the lyrics. The narratives lead the listener, and the story unfolds through Marcelo Quina's vivid portrayal. Apparently Pain of Salvation is one of Thessera's main influences, since the compositions and vocal melodies on fooled Eyes sound fairly similar to PoS here and there. Regardless, Thessera has a style of their own with the occasional Brazilian rhythms and whatnot. Sonically Fooled Eyes is rather good record, as the sounds are dynamic and engaging. Though this band has room to improve, I reckon their debut album is a meritorious release. In passing, I must mention that the artwork is rather good, though I don't find the album cover that attractive. Overall, Thessera is band worthy of becoming acquainted with, if one's into theme-based progrock albums. Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (August 28th, 2006) « back
