Sham of Perfection, the interestingly titled debut album of Tystnaden, offers melodic metal with slightly unique character... imagine a mixture of Evanescence, Darkwell, Nightwish, and Tiamat. While there are already quite many bands with female and male vocalists sharing the stage nowadays, there's always room for just one more. Tystnaden's main strength is the multifaceted combination of their influences - they manage to blend all their influences quite well into cohesive compositions. The song material on Sham of Perfection is fairly steady in terms of quality. Thus I won't name any songs that could rise above the rest in the long run (I'm already on my sixth listen, and thus far I haven't got any favourites). However, I must mention that at times some borrowed sections are even a bit too obvious. Overall, the compositions have been executed rather well, though it feels something's missing. I reckon, the songs should be more gripping and memorable. As such, they don't make strong enough an impact on the listener. In addition, I wish Lorenzo Frascaroli would have a better voice (his voice is rather monotonous). The production on this record is OK - nothing exceptional, but fairly pleasant to listen to. Tystnaden will surely attract some listeners of melodic metal with their somewhat fresh sound that surprisingly doesn't embody that much symphonic metal elements.
