Paatos' Kallocain made quite an impression on me, since I actually anticipated hearing their latest effort "Silence of Another Kind". Not much has changed since Kallocain, as the music still has a strong foundation on ambience and soothing yet crestfallen melodies. Petronella's unique yet somehow misty-eyed voice is rather pleasant, and suits the material really well. She manages to breathe life into the lyrics. Paatos has always relied on building downhearted moods with their music, and this is the case also with their latest work. Silence of Another Kind is an album that requires time, though it can be enjoyed with periodic listening in mind as well. Regardless, the listening becomes more rewarding the more spins one gives to this record. At least in my case the first listen only prepared and got me into the mood, and it wasn't until the second and third listens that really made me "feel" the material. It may be that empathic people might enjoy Paatos more than others - one has to really put one's soul into listening to make it truly rewarding. The production on Silence of Another Kind is a bit retroish, though it's really fitting to the material. All in all, this record is a good post-rock album that doesn't lose its appeal too quickly. In fact, I believe that this release has a fairly long-life, as its charm doesn't seem to wear off. Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (June 18th, 2006) « back
