Lacuna Coil's latest album Karmacode has gotten really hyped thanks to Century Media. Even I started to await its release, since I wanted to know if the group really had progressed since their previous album "Comalies". Fortunately enough they have, though I never have considered Lacuna Coil as one of the brightest stars in the metal scene... instead I've always thought they represent the 'fall through the net' population of bands - they have the potential, but so far they haven't got around utilising it fully. Nonetheless, I've enjoyed listening to each of their previous albums to some extent.

On Karmacode Lacuna Coil showcases more maturity than on their previous releases. Now the group has really achieved a sound of their own... their playing is infused with courage, and they've added both modern and industrial metal influences here and there. In addition to the original tracks, they have included a cover of Depeche Mode's classic "Enjoy the Silence". Their rendition is actually rather good, and fits to the album well.

The production on Karmacode has been handled fairly well. The sounds are warm, yet there's also some edge when that's called for. All in all, Lacuna coil's latest effort is pretty much what one can expect from this group... and some more. In my view, it's their best work to date.
