The second Poets of the Fall album "Carnival of Rust" surprised me quite favourably. In my view, their debut album mainly contained somewhat uninspired humdrum songs, but fortunately this isn't the case with their second undertaking. Carnival of Rust shows that the group has matured a lot, as their material is now more varying than before. One can hear pleasant twists every now and then, and the scope of the material has broadened. Already the second song "Sorry Go 'Round" managed to make a positive impression on me with its inventiveness. Music of Poets of the Fall is a blend of pop and rock - much in the vein of U2. They mix chaste melodies with simplified riffs, and so far it has brought them success. This isn't too surprising, since with straightforward material it's usually easier to find audience than with intricate and progressive compositions. The sounds on Carnival of Rust are rather good. Knowing that this album was recorded at Captain's living room only ensures that one doesn't need costly studios for quality records nowadays. Mastering of this record took place at Chartmakers by Liah Cheston. Overall, Poets of the Fall's second album shows promise, and is rather enjoyable pop/rock record. It isn't surprising at all that this record climbed to the first place on Finland's official record sales chart last week. Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (April 24th, 2006) « back
