Rage has already achieved a respectable 21-year career in music, and their 17th album "Speak of the Dead" showcases that the group still has some fresh ideas left. The most important twist in Rage's career has been, in my view, the moment when they collaborated with Symphonic Orchestra Prague on their Lingua Mortis album in 1996. Before that I regarded this group as just another mediocre power metal band. However, nowadays Rage has distinguished themselves as an innovative symphonic metal band... and I'm actually ready to say at this point that Speak of the Dead has some of their best material so far - so be sure to keep on reading. On "Speak of the Dead" Rage has further developed their music: the most noticeable change is the introduction of progressive elements. Suite Lingua Mortis is almost a 22 minute-long epic (and definitely one of the highlights of this record). The symphonic elements - courtesy of the Inspector Symphonic Orchestra (Belarus) - have given the music a lot of passion, and the musicianship on this album is just breath-taking. Not even the voice-overs on this promo release manage to ruin the mood (although I'd prefer listening to music without that kind of interruption). The production on this album is rather good. The sounds are to the point, although some distortion has been brought into the mix by squeezing in those extra decibels. As a whole this album is rather good, and definitely worth your attention if you're into advanced metal (yes, that's right - I said ADVANCED). I really hope Rage will keep this direction where they're heading at the moment, as it'll take them to new heights. So what are you waiting for? This album won't appear to your CD player by itself.
