I reckon it's fairly challenging to make oneself distinctive in today's music scene. There's fierce competition going on, and people tend to think they've heard it all before - this especially epitomizes the modern US metal scene. Nonetheless, a young and talented group called Phase Nine takes their chance. The music on Phase Nine's EP "For the Sleepless" is a pleasant mix of melodies and grooves. The songs have been well-structured, and the vocalist Kenny Truhn has a good voice. So the setting for success is there... I definitely see potential in the band. One can only hope the band's upcoming debut album will get noticed on the scene. The production of "For the Sleepless" was handled by David Gans and Joshua Aaron. The sounds are to the point with the exception of cymbals (there's just too much sizzle to my liking). Otherwise there's not much to criticize. Be sure to give Phase Nine a listen, if you appreciate good melodies, catchy refrains, and overall good musicianship. Visit Artist's MYSPACE Website - MAGE (March 6th, 2006) « back
