Incontrovertibly Steve Walsh has had an important role in the beginnings of progressive rock and its popularization. Being the singer in one of the most significant prog bands has given Walsh priceless experience. Now, with his new solo album, Walsh expresses his creativity through experimental yet innovative and catchy compositions. On this journey Walsh is joined by Joe Franco (Twisted Sister, Magellan) on drums, Joel Kosche (Collective Soul) on guitars and bass. Also contributions from David Ragsdale (Kansas), Michael Romeo (Symphony X) and Matt Still can be heard on this record. The music on Shadowman is atmospheric yet experimental rock... at times Romeo's orchestral arrangements enliven the music by a notch, however, without taking away the limelight from vocals. Overall, I'm rather pleased with this record. The quality of material is fairly steady, and the rich harmonies make this record appealing to listen to time after time. Since Walsh himself took care of producing "Shadowman", it should sound exactly as intended... Well, I reckon it does, as the sounds are vibrant and warm. If Kansas has been your cup of tea, you should also give Walsh's solo efforts a spin - however, keep in mind the experimental nature of this record.
