Lies in Black is the debut album of a new American metal band Resistance that chose its name as a statement to resist popular trends in music. To give a brief description of their success so far Resistance has shared the stage with Helloween, Exodus, Superjoint Ritual and Prong among others. Basically, however, Lies in Black is rather traditional metal album with a hint of innovativeness. At times the band succeeds to offer few intriguing progressions whilst maintaining their rhythmic grooves... unfortunately, I feel as if Resistance could have done a lot better on this record (some sections could have been played better and especially the guitar solos need work). On top of all, the song material on "Lies in Black" just isn't good enough to impress the listener. Mixing and mastering of this album was handled at Desert Moon Recording Studios (Anaheim, CA) by Patrick Miller. For the most part, the sounds are quite apt and powerful, but the frequent background distortion bothers me slightly. Nonetheless, as a whole, the sonic expression of this album is fairly fitting (especially considering the genre). Resistance might be worth checking out in case you find blending heavy metal with modern wave of american metal appealing (and you can tolerate some weaker sections between the more successful parts). Nevertheless, the short length of this album is definitely a bit of a letdown. Hopefully, Resistance continues to develop their musical vision further as they do have potential.
