The listeners of Steve Vai probably know the young, supporting guitarist for Steve Vai's band. Alongside to playing with Steve Vai, Dave Weiner has composed songs of his own... as a result 'Shove the Sun Aside' has taken form. The music on this album is melodic instrumental rock in the vein of Steve Vai, Andy Timmons, Neal Schon and the like. However, those aforementioned names are just references to artists that Weiner's music shares a small semblance to. For the most part, 'Shove the Sun Aside' contains dreamy sonic pictures that occasionally catch fire resulting in fiery bursts of guitar wizardry. In addition to Weiner's guitar work, 'Shove the Sun Aside' features performances from bassists Philip Bynoe and Graeme Rappaport as well as the drummers Virgil Donati and Steve Wilson. Dave Weiner produced this album by himself, although he got some assistance from David Franz regarding the mixing. The mastering, on the other hand, was handled by Scott Elson. The recordings are clean and the sounds on this album are mostly to the point. Thus only some personal preferences keep me from giving 'Shove the Sun Aside' a shining grade on production. Perhaps the biggest let-down regarding Dave Weiner's debut album is its short length (about 30 minutes if one doesn't take Dave's Party Piece into account). However, in case you listen to a lot of instrumental rock music, checking out Dave Weiner's album might be rather advisable. Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (April 4th, 2005) « back
