Norwegian black metal band Taake was already formed in 1993, but back then they performed under the moniker of Thule. Nonetheless, they don't have too many albums under their belt yet, since this is their third album. Taake plays black metal that resides more on the melodic side than making you bang your head while the music plays in the background. On this third opus there are also guest performances in order to give the album more variety...

...Doedskvad is quite basic black metal album, and doesn't offer any surprises to its listener. Occasionally the melodies on it are fortuitous and as a whole the album is quite ok. However, it leaves the more demanding listener out in the cold for craving more. The quality of material improves a bit towards the end of this album (e.g. better melodies).

Production on this album is rather weak... The sounds are thin and lacking in power, which is quite a big lack on albums of this genre. However, the recordings are occasionally quite clean. Nonetheless, there's some background distortion every now and then. In spite of the thin sounds, there's one advance regarding them — listening this album doesn't become tiring in the long run.

All in all, Taake's ...Doedskvad is rather traditional black metal release. It's a bit more diverse than the average black metal album, but it still could be a lot better... One of its merits is its more melodic approach, which makes it more interesting to listen in the long run.
