Former Kansas guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Kerry Livgren has formed a new band called Proto-Kaw. Proto-Kaw plays progressive rock and jazz rock. Actually Proto-Kaw is the new version of 'Kansas' (just look at the line-up). Here and there Proto-Kaw relapses into gimmickry, but fortunately not too often. Songs are very strong entities, and therefore there's not much to complain about them. Atmosphere on this album is skilfully crafted and vocal harmonies back the atmosphere up quite nicely. Actually I'm quite fond of flute harmonies and that's what you'll get on 'Before Became After'. This album is also quite diverse... Songs don't get repetitive and songs have been composed well. Orchestrations are used felicitously — they aren't overused by any means. 'Before Became After' is a strong progressive rock album. If you're a fan of IQ or some other classic progressive rock groups, you should check out Proto-Kaw. Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (18.06.2004) « back
