Dispiritism is the debut album of Altered Aeon. The band was already formed in 2001 by Henrik Ohlsson (Theory in Practice, Mutant) and Kjell Andersson (Azotic Reign), but they were known as Thrawn back then. Since both of them were in additional bands, it took quite some time for the material to form. Altered Aeon's music is quite ambiguous... Occasionally they have very good parts in their songs (which makes it clear that this band has potential), but on the other hand they have involved too many repetitive technical runs. Their music is a blend of trash metal, technical death metal and power metal (however, the vocals are mostly clean). Imagine how Nile and Brainstorm would sound together (with technical gimmickry involved). Jonas Kjellgren (Carnal Forge, Centinex) produced this album in his Black Lounge studio. In some ways, the distorted rhythm guitar tone could have been better (it had some background fuzz/distortion that occasionally didn't get blocked by the noise gate). Nevertheless, the guitar tone in solos was quite good. The mixing has been done professionally and the sounds are quite apposite. All in all, Altered Aeon is a welcome sight, but they should hone their songwriting skills... Some of their songs are really good (for example, track 11), but on the other hand their other songs have too many not-so-felicitous parts. I have high hopes regarding their future releases though.
