Wuthering Heights is an interesting band... They want to do something different, so they decide to blend a lot of different styles together. Some of the influences come from folk music, speed, symphonic and power metal. They have a good recipe for their music (they don't use anything too much). The band has got a new singer (Nils Patrik Johansson) on this record and he's quite good. His power vocals are little bit reminiscent of Jörn Lande's (and that's a good thing).
The strength of Ravn's compositions is their re-listening value. They don't start to repeat themselves but you'll find always something new when you listen to them again. Genrewise this record is hard to categorize, because Ravn blends a lot of different styles together in his compositions. For example, on Bad Hobbits Die Hard you'll hear some neo-classical sounding synth & guitar solos blended with speed & power metal... and Land of Golden Glory has a folk section, which is quite a nice addition to the symphonic power metal song. The length is over 61 minutes, which is enough (could have been more). The songs have nice atmosphere and overall this record is full of melodic compositions that won't 'wear away' even with the hardest consumption (or maybe they will after you've listened to this record for a month ;). Still there was something with this record that didn't convince me enough to give it a 10 or 9 ½. Anyway, this record is definitely worth a listen or two. - MAGE (28.05.2004) « back
