Ever heard of Symphony X? If you're into progressive metal, there's quite a big change that the name has appeared somewhere... Nevertheless, Michael Pinnella is the keyboardist of Symphony X and "Enter By the Twelfth Gate" is his first solo album. However, this album can't be considered as a new Symphony X album (because it's quite different from Symphony X). The best way to describe the music is by stating the following: This album is like a collection of different soundtracks. All the music is instrumental with an emphasis on synth parts. Although there are some really cool and even beautiful parts, occasionally some sections have some artsycraftsy synth noodling, which basically ruins the mood. However, this album might be of quite high interest to keyboardists (interesting arpeggios etc.). Production-wise there isn't much to complain... Well, there are few clips (probably due to mastering), but otherwise this album has been produced quite well. Some synth sounds are a bit annoying, but it depends on which system you're listening to this album (choice of headphones, Hi-Fi system, monitors etc. affect the overall impression). This album might appeal to some fans, but on the other hand some Symphony X fans might find it worthless. Therefore, I suggest you give this album a listen before buying. - MAGE (19.11.2004) « back
