Despite the rather trivial album title "Forty Six Minutes, Twelve Seconds of Music" Jolly's debut album offers surprisingly good blend of alternative rock and progressive metal. This quartet from New York have come up with rather captivating record focusing on atmosphere, varying use of dynamics, great grooves and catchy melodies. Lyrically, however, this album doesn't reach the same level as with the music alone. The lyrics seem fairly simplified though poetic. The ambient music of Jolly is rather uplifting to listen, and the underlying reason for this may not be the great compositions alone. One intriguing aspect about Jolly's music is in fact them admitting to have used binaural beats like Pearl Jam did earlier on the album "Binaural". Reportedly binaural beats influence our brain in subtle ways through the entrainment of brainwaves, and therefore can be used for relaxation and other health benefits such as pain relief. I'm not so sure about you, but I would say it actually does work in Jolly's music and therefor the band really lives up to its name. Just plug in your headphones on a Monday morning, listen to few tracks of Jolly and you're good to go. The production of Forty Six Minutes, Twelve Seconds of Music has been handled very proficiently. The mix is well balanced with each layer of instrumentation having its own distinctive place. Also the musicianship found on this record is just aweinspiring. The band explores the depths of both softer art rock and heavier progressive metal fairly effortlessly, and craft themselves a sound which stands out from the plethora of releases.
