Wolfmother is an Australian trio playing retroish rock slightly similar to Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and the likes. Original - not even in the lightest sense of the word, but still somehow strangely appealing. To preserve solid completeness on the whole release, the cover art has been done by illustration icon Frank Frazetta. However, the artwork isn't the only thing bringing vinyls into mind, as the tracklist has been divided into two sections as in A and B sides of the old LPs.

At first glimpse Wolfmother seems well-thought out and rather pleasant entrant to the rock scene. However, the record doesn't offer anything new, and all the songs aren't as impressive as I'd wish to hear. Few good riffs and melodies here and there simply aren't enough - the whole record should be awesome by today's standards (the competition is fierce). Regardless, I enjoyed listening to tracks such as Where Eagles Have Been, Joker & the Thief, Colossal, Mind's Eye, Tales, and Vagabond. On the other hand, the lyrical offering on this release is partly weak - take Woman and Love Train for example. Fortunately there are also better written songs like Tales, which has rather good lyrics.

The production on this record is really apt for the material. The sounds are warm and the retroish synths build up the atmosphere well. All in all, Wolfmother's debut record provides a refreshing listen for a change, but in the long run it isn't anything spectacular.
